Cocktail bar to visit in York

The cocktail bar "The Postern Gate" in York is a typical pub of the J D Wetherspoon chain, known for its affordable prices, versatility, and location near historic sites. It is located near the medieval city walls of York, specifically close to the Fishergate Postern Towers, a defensive tower dating back to around 1505, and the Fishergate Bar, one of the old city gates. This historic setting gives the pub a special context, even though it is not a historical building itself. Instead, it was built in a modern structure that seamlessly blends into the surroundings and provides a convenient stop for visitors to the city.

Historical pubs in York

The interior of The Postern Gate is spacious and functional, with an open layout that can accommodate a large number of guests. The décor is typical of Wetherspoon pubs: dark wood, comfortable seating, and a casual atmosphere suitable for both a quick stop and longer stays. There is a beer garden, popular in good weather, as well as tables outside the entrance for additional outdoor seating. The bar is centrally located and well visible, making the ordering process easier. The walls are decorated with historical details and images that recall York's medieval significance as the second largest and second most important city in England, giving the pub a certain cultural depth.

Affordable dining options in York

The drink selection is diverse and a central attraction. The Postern Gate offers a variety of real ales, including classics like Doom Bar and rotating guest ales that shine at regular beer festivals – such as the 12-day event in the spring. Craft beers like Punk IPA and international options like Italian Poretti complement the range. Cocktails are available but not the main focus; they include simple classics that can be quickly served, important in a high-traffic pub. Wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic drinks complete the offering, as well as freshly ground Lavazza coffee, which can be refilled unlimitedly. Prices are remarkably affordable for a tourist city like York, making the pub particularly attractive to budget-conscious guests.

Culinarily, The Postern Gate offers an all-day menu available from breakfast to late evening. Breakfast includes traditional options like a full English breakfast with sausage, egg, bacon, and beans, often priced around £3. The main menu features British classics like fish and chips, pies, and burgers served in generous portions. There are also lighter options like salads and vegetarian dishes, with the kitchen designed for speed and consistency. Seasonal offers, like a two-person menu for special occasions, show the pub's focus on versatility. Meals can be ordered through an app, speeding up service and minimizing contact with staff – a practical option appreciated by many guests.

Traditional English breakfast in York

The atmosphere at The Postern Gate varies depending on the time of day. Mornings and afternoons are a quiet place for a budget-friendly breakfast or coffee, especially popular with travelers and families staying nearby. Evenings and weekends are livelier, with groups and tourists filling the bar, often drawn by the proximity to the city center and attractions like Clifford's Tower. The pub is also a meeting point for rugby fans, as games like the Six Nations Championship are broadcast live here. Despite the high number of visitors, the space rarely feels crowded due to its size, and the staff is often praised for their efficiency, although there may be waiting times during peak hours.

The service is functional and friendly, with staff trained to maintain a good overview even during busy periods. Cleanliness is perceived differently – while many guests praise the regular cleaning of tables, there is occasional criticism of messy corners or the toilets. The pub offers practical amenities like free Wi-Fi and wheelchair access, making it accessible to a wide audience. It is not a place for exclusive experiences but a reliable meeting point for those seeking good quality at fair prices.

Lovely modern Wetherspoon in York. Purpose built with light and airy feel and lots of glass and steel. Usual good food and value prices. Enjoyed it, although it's a bit of a walk from the city centre.

Rude staff, they will take your drinks, whilst you go for a smoke. And then tell you they won't serve you after you complain. Joke of a place and run by little kids.

Went for a meal with my grandson. Unfortunately, the app wasn't working, and as we were in a hurry, we just had a quick drink and left.

Food is nice, got that traditional whetherspoons vibe going for it. Gets extremely busy on a Friday and Saturday night so just be mindful when choosing this place. Service has been quite fast for me, found the steak hard to eat as it was quite chewy, but all the other food I've had has been great.

Me and my friend visited yesterday, even though the viking festival was on, and the place was busy, we managed to find a table straight away. We ordered our food and drink by the weatherspoons app, and that came within 10 minutes. The food was hot and freshly cooked, the only set back was the garlic bread that I ordered was really greasy and I couldn't eat any of it. When I was biting into the garlic bread, it was like eating dough, it was covered in that much grease. But everything else was fine.
